I Hiked Machu Picchu Mountain - Peru's Best View?

Most people visit Machu Picchu for the postcard photo.

You know the one — ruins, mountains, perfect symmetry.

But very few people go higher.

Way higher.

Up Machu Picchu Mountain — a steep, brutal climb that promises something better:

👉 A true bird’s-eye view of one of the world’s greatest wonders.

So I decided to test it myself.

And yeah… it nearly broke me.

Machu Picchu

🌄 4:45 AM – This Is Where It Starts

Alarm goes off early.

Like… painfully early.

  • 4:45 AM wake-up

  • Out the door by 5:00 AM

  • In line for a 6:00 AM entry

And I’m already in trouble.

Altitude sickness hit me hard:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Sore throat

  • Low energy

I skipped acclimatization in Cusco… and I paid for it.

But there’s no turning back now.

Machu Picchu

🚌 Getting to the Entrance

From Aguas Calientes, you take a bus up to the entrance.

At 5:00 AM?

There are already over 100 people in line.

And here’s something most people don’t know:

👉 The mountain hike doesn’t even open until 7:00 AM.

So you’re just… waiting.

Cold. Tired. Questioning your life choices.

🥾 The Climb Begins

At 7:00 AM, the gates open.

You:

  • Show your ticket

  • Start climbing immediately

And it hits fast.

This isn’t a casual hike.

  • Constant stairs

  • Steep incline

  • Narrow paths

  • No breaks in elevation

It’s roughly a 3,000 ft elevation gain — straight up.

😵 30 Minutes In – Reality Check

15 minutes in:

  • Breathing gets harder

  • Throat burns

  • Head starts pounding

35 minutes in?

👉 I was struggling.

Rain, altitude, and exhaustion all at once.

🧠 The Mental Battle

About an hour in, it stopped being physical.

It became mental.

  • Should I keep going?

  • Is this even worth it?

  • What if the view is just clouds?

I had to stop multiple times.

Sit.

Reset.

Try not to throw up.

🐢 1 Hour 40 Minutes – Finally the Summit

Most people take:

  • 1–1.5 hours

Me?

👉 1 hour and 40 minutes… at a snail’s pace.

And when I got there?

Nothing.

Just clouds.

Fog.

Zero visibility.

⏳ Waiting at the Top

This is the part nobody talks about.

You don’t just hike up and leave.

You wait.

  • Sitting on rocks

  • Watching clouds move

  • Hoping for one clear moment

And then…

🤯 The View Finally Shows Up

Out of nowhere…

The clouds cleared.

And there it was.

Machu Picchu from above.

Not the postcard.

Not the Instagram shot.

Something better.

Standing over 10,000 feet above the ruins… everything finally made sense.

📸 Is This the Best View in Peru?

Let’s be honest.

This hike is:

  • Hard

  • Uncomfortable

  • Not for everyone

But the payoff?

👉 Completely different perspective

You’re not just looking at Machu Picchu.

You’re seeing:

  • The scale

  • The surrounding mountains

  • The isolation

  • The full landscape

And that changes everything.

Machu Picchu

⚠️ What You NEED to Know Before Doing This

1. Altitude Is Real

If you skip acclimatization in Cusco…

👉 This hike will hurt.

2. Pack Light

I made this mistake.

Carrying a heavy bag = huge regret.

3. Weather Is Unpredictable

  • Rain

  • Fog

  • Heat

  • Sun

All in one hike.

4. It’s Not a Casual Walk

This is NOT:

  • A stroll

  • A sightseeing path

It’s a full-on climb.

🏁 Final Verdict: Worth It or Not?

If you want:

  • Easy photos

  • Quick experience

👉 Skip it.

But if you want:

  • A challenge

  • A story

  • A perspective few people get

👉 This is 100% worth it.

Because the struggle?

That’s what makes the view hit harder.
